The “American Dream” of China
Reading in the world I grew up in was never a huge deal. Everyone around me at some point read; my mom would read to my brother and I, my brother and my mom would read for enjoyment and entertainment, as would I. But in China in Ten Words by Yu Hua, reading wasn’t always around for him. It was circa the Cultural Revolution in China, when books were banned and sometimes burned. So when Yu came across a book, it was a miracle.
