With Election day closing in on Americans, the decision about who to vote for can be a difficult one. With issues including the War in Iraq, health care, our economy, education and energy, there is allot of information to consider before Americans cast there vote. For me, Energy is a huge category to consider. John McCain makes some pretty unbelievable promises, claiming he knows how to lead the United States towards a new and cleaner power source by shifting our economy.

In chapter six of the book unSpun: finding facts in a world of disinformation the authors, Brooks Jackson and Kathleen Hall Jamieson, warn us about drawing fast conclusions from little evidence. The chapter starts with an example of this. In the 1970's two different articles titled “Do Crows Use Automobiles as nutcrackers?” were published. Two different authors wrote about experiences they had were a crow had used an automobile to crack open a nut and also to break apart a piece of fruit.

In chapter seven of the book unSpun the authors, Brooks Jackson and Kathleen Hall Jamieson, devote a whole section on how to find reliable websites with accurate information. The section is titled Finding The Good Stuff. “The key is finding the right websites and knowing how to evaluate their reliability.” (131) The authors suggest that we disregard any anonymous information and stick with a reliable source such as those with authority. They also warn, that while on the site, you still need to use common sense.

Chapters 5 and 7

In chapter 5 of the book unSpun, written by Brooks Jackson and Kathlene Hall Jamieson, the authors stress how important it is to get your facts right. They start by telling a story of a well-to-do man named Daniel Bullock who fell for a scam that he thought was the legal answer to not paying his taxes. Due to the fact that Bullock didn't take the time to challenge the information he was receiving, he is now serving time in a federal prison for tax evasion. The authors give many good examples on how to help us get our facts right.

It’s easy to see how someone can get confused or mis lead when it comes to politics and upcoming election. I think chapter three in the book unSpun, written by Brooks Jackson and Kathleen Hall Jamieson, help clear up the confusion that can sometimes come with political campaigns. They describe some common tricks to watch out for.

I recently watched a John McCain ad that aired 6-27-08. The ad made some huge and pretty unbelievable promises. John McCain states that we need to “shift our economy towards a new and cleaner power source”. He suggested these cleaner power sources could be obtained through wind, solar power, and bio fuels. He called it “Energy Security”. Doesn’t that sound fantastic. No more fuel costs is the first thing that ran through my mind. Then the ad showed a picture of green meadows with huge wind things.

In chapters three and four of the book “unSpun” the authors, Brooks Jackson and Kathleen Hall Jamieson, help us to better recognize the common tricks used to deceive us, including our own mind. Trick number one is known as the “Misnomers”. These have to due with naming certain things so that the public is fooled into what they are receiving. A good example the authors used for this was coffee sizes. At Starbucks, for instance, a 12 ounce small coffee is called a tall coffee.

In chapters one and two of the book " unSpun " the Authors, Brooks Jackson and Kathleen Hall Jamieson, put into perspective how everyday the American public is deceived by advertisements and political campaigns. The purpose of this deception is nothing more than pure greed and profit. According to the authors Americans spend billions a year on unproven, fraudulently marketed, often useless health related products and devises. Besides wasted money , commercial deception can be so misleading it can cause bad health, and in extreme cases even death.
