Impromptu Tasks
Write an essay in response to each of the below prompts (one each day). We will spend one day on each of these two drafts. You will then chose one of the two drafts to revise and include in your portfolio.
The primary concerns of essay readers in the portfolio process when it comes to reading impromptu essays is that the essays demonstrate clear use of essay format, that there is a clearly argumentative thesis, that paragraphs are clearly delineated (one idea per paragraph), that there is sufficient detail in each paragraph to support any generalizations, that the sentences are readable and that there is solid demonstration of mechanical and grammatical as well as rhetorical skills.
- Based on the reading you’ve done and the essays you have written, discuss the manner in which your views of the American political and advertising system and the role of spin have either been changed or reinforced. I'll allow quite wide latitude in how this is addressed, such as you being thankful for being made more aware of spin and its roll. Be sure you make a point and support that point with examples from the reading. Be sure to provide your reader with a clear thesis and specific examples to illustrate the various points you present as evidence.
-
Discuss the manner in which the work you have done this quarter has (or hasn't) informed your writing, your writing process and/or you as a writer (which means you can hit on one, two, or all three of these points) while preparing you for the writing assignments you are likely to face in the remainder of your education. Be sure to provide your reader with a clear thesis and specific examples to illustrate the various points you present as evidence.
