Video Analysis Paragraphing

Use the following as something of a schematic for structuring your paragraphs for this assignment. There will be four parts: topic statement, explanation of the topic statement's place in the essay, a specific example and an explanation tying the material back to the thesis.

Topic Statement: One of the essential elements to look at when examining a candidate's constructed mythology is the background location(s) shown in their ad. Why topic statement point matters: Background locations help establish a candidate's mythology by associating them with the values of the chosen places. Example: For instance, in her "Scranton" video, viewers see Hillary Clinton, as a very young child, in the garden of a well kept house as she intones on visiting a lake cottage with no indoor shower. The house is not small, but it is not large either. It might remind someone of their grandparent's house. The garden area is well kept, with a trim lawn and a number of unidentifiable bushes and shrubs, any of which might be in the garden of any viewer. Warrant/Explanatory Link back to thesis: What this location shows is that Clinton is the product of a family that is grounded in the middle class, making her "one of us" rather than the product of a well-to-do, more upper-crust environment. Because of this, she can relate to what we want and need from a president, she is in touch with us on social, cultural and economic concerns, or so she would have us believe. Not everyone will buy this "woman of the people" mythology she is selling, but some will and this will likely garner her votes while also costing her some from the more cynical members of the electorate.
