Bradley's intro
Submitted by bradb on Tue, 06/24/2008 - 11:01.
First, for those who haven't yet clicked on the "schedule" link in the upper-right of the page, here's what people are posting as way of an introduction: Post an introduction of yourself, telling us three things that are true about you and one lie. Read and respond to others, speculating on what is the lie and why.
As for me, I get to post on the front page here, since I'm the hot-shot teacher. Here are four things about me, one of them not true.
- I've recently worked with a former NASA Astronaut, a veteran of three shuttle missions. One was just before The Challenger explosion, one right after.
- Until recently, I was a pack-a-day (give or take a few of course) smoker. My main motivation for quitting was the cost, about $170 a month for the cigarettes alone, never mind the breath "cleaner," lighters and the like, not to mention having to endure the nagging of my family, wife, son and doctor.
- My wife is currently in Japan on a Fullbright Memorial Fund Scholarship and my son is at the Oregon coast with his grandparents; I'm home with our dog, five cats, two guinea pigs and four fish (who live in the pond in the backyard). The house is not so clean as it usually is.
- My family has been in the Spokane area for about a century, give or take a few years. My wife's family has been in the region about the same length of time, maybe longer.
Just so you know, I started with four truths and then had to make a lie out of one of them.

post Challenger
Before I accidentally cheated and saw your secret revealed in the blog, I was going to guess your lie was about the astronaut having been on a shuttle mission right after the Challenger explosion. Didn't NASA take quite a long hiatus in shuttle launches after that incident? I was in 8th grade at the time and I guess I didn't pay much attention to NASA missions.
they did take a long break
I forget how long after the Challenger before they had another mission, but it was quite some time, probably over a year anyway. Bradley
Brads untruth
I'm guessing that you are not quite telling the truth about the recent cessation of smoking. You do alot of biking and smoking wouldn't allow you to be as active so I'm thinking that you possibly did smoke but that it was years ago.
Hi Bradley, Thanks for
Hi Bradley,
Thanks for challenging my thinking process with changing how my on-line class format will take place. (not blackboard) I am looking forward to this class and what it has to offer. My speculation would be that your fib is that your wife is currently in Japan and your son is at his grandparents and that you are home alone. If my family were gone, home is the last place that I would be. No responsibilities other than an on-line class that can be managed from anywhere, I would be finding myself a nice vacation location, packing up the pets, and living it up. (only in a dream world. lol)

cancer sticks
I am going to make a guess that the lie was the end of the smoking bit. I dont think that the reasons where the cost, or the nagging of the family. There were probably other motivations. Just a guess, I could be wrong.
also...
I would like to make a second guess, that yes, your wife is in Tokyo ( I read the other blog), and perhaps your son is on the Oregon coast visiting Granparents. It would have to be your parents and not your wife's because you also said that your wife's parents live in the Spokane area. The lie part would be how many pets you are left at home with. On the other hand, I have learned that in the past, when I second guess myself or go with my second or more educated guess, it's the wrong guess. So, I can't wait to find out.
Spokane area=False
"My family has been in the Spokane area for about a century, give or take a few years. My wife's family has been in the region about the same length of time, maybe longer."
I think this one is the lie. One because you stated at the end of your entry:
"I started with four truths then had to make a lie out of one of them"
Something just tells me you grew up in the Seattle area not Spokane, or your wife grew up in a entirely different area as well.
Can't exactly pinpoint it, but I think one of these in that is false perhaps both.
grew up in Seattle
You're right that I grew up in Seattle, but that doesn't mean my family, extended family is what I meant there, couldn't have been here for quite some time, which they have. My wife's too. For instance, when my family vacations up at Priest Lake this year, it will be the 51st year of that vacation, which started when I was a few months old in 1958, and Priest Lake was still way out in the woods. My wife's great-grandparents homesteaded on Spirit Lake a long time back, when you could still homestead. They also, at one point, owned most of the land around Hayden Lake. They sold a lot of it off in the 1970s when the region was in the doldrums, getting a couple thousand bucks for waterfront lots so they could pay their property taxes. My grandparents honeymooned on Hayden Lake in the 1920s. One of my uncles had the first Honda dealership in town, when they were a cheap bit of Japanese junk, or so lovers of American cars thought at the time. If you've seen those old, tiny Hondas, you'd probably agree. Finally, my wife's grandfather taught band in Coeur d'Alene high schools and conducted big bands when they had dances at the Davenport in the 1960s and 70s. There's more, but I'll leave it at that. So I was 50/50. Got your
So I was 50/50. Got your place right, just not the family history.
Hi Teach!
Umm I'm gonna go with the "hot-shot teacher" as the fib. Am I wrong? (just kidding of course). I think all of the things you said were interesting, however, I'm going to go with the end portion of the smoking part as the fib. You said you quit recently because of the nagging from your family members. However, half your family members are gone! I smoked for 16 yrs and quit two years ago almost to the day. If you did quit smoking (if you ever smoked), I give you two thumbs up and all my toes because that was one of the hardest, best, things I've ever done. By the way, thanks for the "thanks".

hmmmm
Congrats on giving up the evil weed. So you think that I would either not give it up if others were gone, or I might have backslid in their absence? Maybe it would be better to quit with others not around so they wouldn't have to endure the crankiness and crabbiness? Maybe you're right, but I'm not copping to the truth just yet. Bradley
Well...
Bradley,
That's very understandable but that's not exactly what I meant. What I mean is, how can they nag you if they're not even there? Or is it over the phone? I cried for almost 4 months straight when I quit smoking, about the stupidest things too. Couldn't make the bed right? Bawl. Couldn't find the shoes that I threw under the couch last time. Bawl. Quitting while others are not around is a good idea for that reason, however, what would be the point?

the devil is in the details
I see your point. My son has been gone only a few days, and my wife, a couple of weeks. Okay, I admit it. It wasn't the cigarettes. The cigarettes were the lie. Bradley
