Kim's ch 1 and 2 summary

In chapters one and two of the book " unSpun " the Authors, Brooks Jackson and Kathleen Hall Jamieson, put into perspective how everyday the American public is deceived by advertisements and political campaigns. The purpose of this deception is nothing more than pure greed and profit. According to the authors Americans spend billions a year on unproven, fraudulently marketed, often useless health related products and devises. Besides wasted money , commercial deception can be so misleading it can cause bad health, and in extreme cases even death. During elections, politicians deceive the public in much the same way. Simply put they promise things that don't happen in order to favor themselves. They create a false illusion of reality. Now that we know the reasons why we are being deceived, shouldn't we try to stop falling for these deceptions over and over again? In chapter two the authors explain and give many examples on how advertising ads and politicians play off of our fears and insecurities to gain our trust. They provide the reader with warning signs to watch out for such as thing that sound to good to be true. They also warn you to be cautious of word such as "more, most. higher, and highest. These word usually come with the deception that one product, or person, is better than the other. Not only do they claim they're better than the competitor, but they also cast blame on the competitor. The authors say this is for no other reason than to divert attention from their own weaknesses. Also a good piece of advise is to watch out for scams that promise results after you have already paid. In the end watching out for these warning signs and asking questions is your best bet in avoiding the deceptions of advertising and politics.

Grammar

The only advice I would give you is to go back over your summary and where there's a pause you should put a comma. It will change the structure of your paper. Also, around the middle of your summary you start a quote but there are no end quotation marks. Maybe break up into some paragraphs when you start a new thought. I hope these suggestions were helpful. =)Mary B
