notes on essay four and essay three returned

Here's an important addition: When rounding up your sources, the directions state that you can use just two from the web, and the other two must be from a book, journal, magazine or similar source. When articles are taken from ProQuest, they DO NOT count as coming from the web, even though you access them online. ProQuest is a database of publications. Colleges and universities use these databases because they cannot afford to both subscribe to all the publications and store them in a library. These databases are almost the new library (though real books and journals are still great things). Web sources are those such as the campaign site, political party sites, and the like. If you take an article off nytimes.com, it counts as a website. If you take the same article form ProQuest, it counts as a non-web, print source. I know it's screwy, but much of life is. Let me know if you have any questions about this. end of important addition

First, I apologize for being slower than I'd hoped to be in getting these essays responded to and back to you. I was a single parent for the week (which only happens occasionally thankfully) along with a number of obligations I had to meet for the college. Once I get this posted, I'll begin returning the drafts of your third essay for further consideration and revision. The revisions of essay three will be due Monday, August 18 at midnight. As usual, I won't field any questions on these essays until after noon tomorrow, Sunday the 10th. It just so happens, I'll be on my way to Seattle for a project meeting but that will give me some evening time to get the revised second essays read and responded to, and returned of course. Click on "read more" to see the rest of this note.

The just returned essays have a grade for that essay, and your course grade to date. The "grade to date" includes the first essay revision grades and the second two essay grades, unrevised. Participation points won't be factored in until all work is complete and the overall essay average is determined to be above a 2.0. When I return the essay two revisions, I'll again include an essay grade and a grade-to-date so you know where you stand. The class numbers for this essay were an average of 1.92 and a median of 1.70. This makes the average very close to a 'C' and the median, where half of the grades are above and half are below, is a 'C-'. Looking at grades to date, the class average is 1.94 and the median 2.03, both of which are essentially a 'C' grade. All will go up once the revisions are responded to.

Right now I don't have a particular "lecture" to deliver regarding the final assignment beyond the reading materials attached to the assignment. If you have questions, let me know.

Hmmm

So we can use two from the web that are non proquest.. and others from proquest and from the book? Sorry but that is a bit.. screwy as you say! Just wondering if I'm going to need to go take things out or if I'm OK. I am confused on this.

screwy

You got it. The difference is that the web, such as a Mccain.com or something like that, goes through no peer review process. If I had thought about it years ago, I could have bought this domain and either sold it for big bucks to the campaign or done my own thing with it. As Jackson and Jamieson say, the web is anarchy. ProQuest, and other databases, are actually collections of materials that are first produced in print and then digitized for the web, made available through subscription. In some ways, the real difference could be that you could use any two sources the validity of which it is entirely on your to be sure of (websites in this instance) and works that have gone through a filtering process, which happens to varying degrees in any traditionally print venue. A lot of filtering by experts in academic and professional journals and less filtering, by lesser experts generally, in newspapers and magazines. I'll look at your draft and see if you are on the right track. Bradley
