Grading

Grading is always a tenuous proposition, one both of us would rather do without, but we don't have that choice. Here is how grading will work.

English 98 students will earn credit for each writing task completed. Their final grade will be a 'P' and a certain number of credits, something between one and five. If no work is credited, the grade will be 'Z'. Depending upon the quality of one's work, it may be suggested that a student repeat English 98 or move on to either English 99 or English 101. Most successful English 98 students will find themselves headed into English 99.

English 99 students will receive a traditional number grade for each assignment but the highest grade for assignments will be 3.0. This number will be derived from the rubric where the total number of points will be added together and then divided by four This will provide a grade somewhere between 0.0 and 3.0. The remainder of the grade will be determined by the overall quality of the portfolio compiled during the course of the quarter, with an emphasis on the assignments submitted later in the quarter when the best work should be occurring.
