Reading in the world I grew up in was never a huge deal. Everyone around me at some point read; my mom would read to my brother and I, my brother and my mom would read for enjoyment and entertainment, as would I. But in China in Ten Words by Yu Hua, reading wasn’t always around for him. It was circa the Cultural Revolution in China, when books were banned and sometimes burned. So when Yu came across a book, it was a miracle.

For without the ability to read we have little chance to improve ourselves professionally, financially or academically. Many in the United States do not realize the opportunities that are presented to us when It comes to the availability of literature. In Hua Yu's Book, China in Ten Words, a look at China though a collection of words and their interpretation by Hua Yu, we are given a glimpse of the opportunities presented to Hua.

The “Writing” chapter from China in Ten Words gives insight to the struggles and occasional luck of Yu Hua as he forges his career transition from a young unfulfilled dentist to a free spirited writer. He had lived through the Cultural Revolution with his family’s name still intact and had sent enough manuscripts to eventually bother a response from a magazine in Beijing. Not having any reputable contacts, this was a one in a million chance during a time of slim publishing chances. Yu used the published manuscript to convince his transfer to the Cultural Center, becoming an official writer.

Hua decided to break it down into 4 pieces to make it have an essay like feel making it incredibly easy to break down and respond in essay form.
