Journal 15: crossdressing, ametuer surgery and Anti-Semetism
In act four Portia’s brilliant defense of Antonio is based deeply in entrapping Shylock but also Antonio seems to show mercy as well. In the beginning of the act Shylock seems to be out for blood, “You’ll ask me why I rather choose to have a weight of carrion flesh than to receive three thousand ducats. I’ll not answer that, but say it is my humor.” It seems that Shylock has such hatred for Antonio nothing would please him more than to see him suffering. Then as it seems Antonio’s fate is to loose a pound of flesh Portia enters in costume and argues that although the contract calls for a pound of flesh it say's nothing about rending any blood from Antonio's body. Also since in open court Shylock refused the three thousand ducats he is now obligated to attempt to remove a pound of flesh from Antonio without spilling any blood and since everyone in the room knows this is impossible Shylock begins to leave. Yet, as Shylock makes his way to the door Portia’s disguised form brings up the Venetian law stating that if someone directly or indirectly attempts murder half of his or her goods belong to the person attempted on. This is where the entrapment is shown but almost immediately afterwards mercy is shown towards Shylock by the same person he was so mercilessly calling for to loose a pound of flesh. Antonio forfeits the half of Shylock’s he could get on the terms Shylock’s daughter inherits it upon his death.
